SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WEST COAST

OUR SALTY LIFE

STORY & CONTENT BY: Daz & Lee from Our Salty Life | LOCATION: Western Australia

You’ll find us somewhere along the West coast of Australia.

There’s a certain kind of peace that comes from waking up to the sound of waves instead of alarms. The gentle hum of the ocean, the smell of salt in the air, and that first barefoot step onto cool sand – it’s a reminder of why we chose the road less ordinary.

Life on the road with our caravan has taught us that freedom doesn’t come from fancy resorts or tight schedules. It’s in the simple things – brewing coffee while the sun rises over the beach, pumping up the boat with sand between your toes, or watching a storm roll in knowing you’ve got everything you need right there with you.

Our days follow the rhythm of the coast. We fish when the tide’s right, explore when curiosity calls, and rest when the wind says it’s time. Some days we find hidden bays where the only footprints are ours. Other days, we swap stories with travellers who quickly feel like old mates.

It’s not always easy – the corrugated tracks, the red dust, and the moments when plans fall apart – but that’s part of the beauty. Out here, challenges turn into lessons, and each sunrise brings a new chance to explore, laugh, and live a little slower.

For us, it’s about connection – with each other, with nature, and with the moment right in front of us. These memories become our story. They remind us that home isn’t a place; it’s wherever you pull up, roll out the awning, and watch the day fade into another salty sunset.

NINGALOO, WA

There are places you visit… and then there’s Ningaloo — the kind of place that gets under your skin and stays there long after the sand’s been washed from your feet.

We’ve spent weeks tucked along this coast, chasing tides, diving with turtles, and falling asleep to the sound of the reef breathing just beyond the shoreline. The days blend together in the best way — salt-crusted mornings, barefoot afternoons, and evenings that stretch out under skies so full of stars you forget what darkness ever looked like.

Life here is raw and honest. The track in is rough, the wind doesn’t care about your plans, and the sun shows no mercy — but that’s all part of it. The challenges strip everything back to what really matters: a good camp, a cold drink, and the kind of freedom you can’t buy.

This place taught us to slow down, to listen, and to live lighter. We’ve shared countless laughs with mates around driftwood fires, watched whales breach just offshore, and felt that quiet sense of belonging that only the wild gives you. Oz was with us for so much of it — nose in the breeze, paws in the sand — and his spirit still runs along every beach we visit.

Ningaloo isn’t just a destination. It’s a feeling — one that pulls you back no matter how far you roam. For us, it’s a reminder that the best moments don’t need planning… they just need time, good company, and a little bit of salt on your skin.

DAMPIER PENINSULA AND BROOME, WA

Up North, where the deep red dirt meets turquoise water and Boab trees cast their sculpted shadows over endless beaches, the Dampier Peninsula and Broome feel like a world apart. We’ve spent weeks exploring this coast, camping on traditional owners’ land, following remote tracks, and soaking in every ounce of the rugged beauty that makes this region unforgettable. The tides here are dramatic — at high tide, the beaches disappear beneath the ocean; at low tide, vast sandflats stretch for kilometres, revealing hidden creeks, tidal pools, and secrets waiting to be discovered. Every step through the rich, earthy dirt leaves a mark, a reminder that you’re immersed in a land that feels alive.

Broome itself is a feast for the senses. Cable Beach at sunset is mesmerising — we loved watching the camels stroll home along the soft sands, their silhouettes painted against the fiery sky, while the ocean whispered at their feet. For a completely different perspective, we took a helicopter out to a deserted beach, champagne in hand, and let the wind carry us above turquoise waters stretching endlessly into the horizon. At Willie Creek Pearl Farm, we discovered the shimmering history of Broome’s famous pearls, and at the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park, we came face-to-face with the wild heart of the region.

Evenings here have their own magic. The outdoor Sun Picture Theatre fills the night with the warmth of laughter and stories under the stars, while the Staircase to the Moon transforms the flats into a glowing, ethereal staircase as the tide and moonlight combine in a fleeting spectacle. Cold drinks shared with new friends at Matso’s Brewery and Spinifex Brewery round out the day, the laughter and chatter mixing with the breeze that drifts off the ocean.

Out here, the dust, heat, and rugged tracks aren’t obstacles — they’re part of the adventure. Camping under endless skies, exploring remote beaches, and discovering hidden corners teaches you to slow down, breathe deeply, and savour every moment. The Dampier Peninsula and Broome aren’t just destinations — they’re a feeling: bold, wild, and unforgettable, leaving stories and memories that linger long after the tracks fade behind you.
