EAST ARNHEM LAND, NT

A TROPICAL PARADISE LEFT WILD & UNTOUCHED

STORY & CONTENT BY: Wild Touring | LOCATION: East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory

One of Australia's last unspoiled tropical paradises! A remote wilderness area in the northeast of Australia’s Northern Territory, East Arnhem Land has been on our bucket list forever and what we experienced there blew us away! The most amazing creeks and waterfalls to swim in, jungle swings, beautiful beaches, epic fishing, remote islands and the friendliest locals who took us in as their own and showed us what their home town has to offer!

Home to the traditional landowners, the Yolngu people, permits are required to visit East Arnhem Land. These include transit permits to travel via road, as well as access permits to visit camping and recreational areas.

The journey began with a 675 km drive along the unsealed Central Arnhem Road - one of Australia’s most infamous and iconic drives. We were apprehensive about what lay ahead, the road had only just reopened after some very big late rain. Locals had told us the road was in the worst condition it had been in for many years. With only 1 overnight camping stop permitted as a condition of the road permit, the journey from the start of the Central Arnhem Road to the township of Nhulubuy took us well over 10 hours. We encountered herds of wild buffalo, rainforest-like vegetation, massive termite mounds, river crossings, potholes and washouts, dingoes, donkeys and plenty of red dirt!

Upon reaching Nhulubuy we based ourselves at Manyimi Campground for the next few weeks, an absolute beachfront location on the grounds of the Gove Boat Club. From here we explored the region.
